‘Old York brings us 150 photographs dating back to the late 19th century; they are not just the usual stuff – the book is enhanced by the inclusion of a number of rarely seen images from the Evelyn Collection (held by the Yorkshire Architectural & York Archaeological Society) and by photos from the extensive archives of the York Press – again rarely, if ever, seen since they appeared in the paper decades ago… All in all a pleasingly refreshing look at old York which… clearly shows that there is a lot more to York than bars [gates], walls , snickelways, a minster and the Shambles.
